EMU continues great start with 2-1 road win

emu sportsWhatever supposed kinks EMU’s soccer men needed to work out of their system during the early parts of their season, they seem to be doing it. The Royals scored twice in the first half to pick up a 2-1 win at Stevenson Sunday afternoon.

After a pair of weekend wins in Maryland, the men are now 3-1-2 just a week-and-a-half into the 2016 campaign. They went 2-4 over a similar season-opening stretch last year.

Eastern Mennonite heads to Ferrum on Wednesday for their fourth consecutive road game, starting at 7:00pm. The night functions as a doubleheader, with the women’s teams also playing each other at 4:00pm.

The Royals had a couple of chances early against Stevenson before cashing in on a free kick in the 19th minute. As usual,Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) took the kick from 30 yards out, finding the 6-2 Emmanuel Boamah(Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) for the sophomore’s first collegiate goal.

Parker Leap (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) then made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, when he took a pass from Joshua Chiquillo (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) and beat the Mustangs’ keeper.

The second half grew increasingly physical with a total of three red cards being issued. Stevenson was playing a man up (10 vs. 9) from the 65th minute on, but EMU’s defense held firm until the home team snuck in a goal on a free kick with 18 seconds left.

The Mustangs ended with a 14-10 advantage in shot, but Eastern Mennonite simply made better use of their chances. Matthew Overacker (Mount Crawford, Va./Turner Ashby) made two saves during the first half and freshman Cody Martin (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle) made five saves in net over the final 45.

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
