Renaissance School in Charlottesville is hosting its fourth annual Chess Tournament for students in grades K-8, ages 5-14, on Saturday, Nov. 8.

If your kid wants to enter, the deadline is Thursday, Nov. 6 – click here.

I guarantee several of these kids would beat me at chess.

A generation ago, I wrote a story as a young staff writer at The News Virginian about a kid in first grade who was a chess prodigy, and to set the tone for the story, I played him in a match.

Which didn’t last long.

And then had the kid tell me what I did wrong.

When he explained that it started with my first move, I knew the jig was up.

I won an award for that story. At least humiliating myself on the front page of the local paper netted me something.
