Cavaliers sweep UVA Duals to open 2016 season

uva athleticsThe national-ranked Virginia cross country teams swept the UVA Duals to open the 2016 season Thursday evening (Sept. 1) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville.

The No. 16 Cavalier women defeated James Madison, 18-40, and Liberty, 15-50, while the No. 12 Virginia men finished ahead of Liberty, 15-43, and Norfolk State, 22-36.

Sophomore Emily Mulhern (Ijamsville, Md.) won the women’s 4K race in 15:17, just ahead of second place graduate student Sarah Astin (Isle of Man, Great Britain). Junior Megan Rebholz (Stafford, Va.), sophomore Bonnie Angermeier (Blacksburg, Va.) and graduate student Beth Hawling (Cheltenham, Great Britain) placed fourth through sixth, respectively.

In the men’s 4K race, freshman Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) finished second overall in 12:31, followed by redshirt freshmen John Pace (Chantilly, Va.) and Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.). Junior Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) placed sixth, while junior Kenneth Hagen (Blacksburg, Va.) was seventh to round out the scoring five for UVA.

Next up, the Cavaliers head to Cary, N.C., Sept. 16 for the adidas XC Challenge.
