uva-basketball newSixth-ranked Virginia overcame another sluggish start to race past Bradley, 82-57, on Thursday in the first round of the Charleston Classic.

The ‘Hoos (2-1) will face Long Beach State (3-0) on Friday at 9:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the eight-team tournament. Long Beach State defeated Seton Hall, 80-77, on Thursday to advance in the winner’s bracket.

In the nightcap, UVA trailed 22-19 at the 7:46 mark of the first half before closing on an 18-3 run to lead 37-25 at the break. It was defense that turned things around in that stretch, with Bradley scoring on just two of their final 12 possessions of the opening 20 minutes.

A Callum Barker layup cut the lead to 10 on the first possession of the second half, but that was as close as Bradley would get. Virginia made 15 of its first 20 shots of the second half to break the game open.

Anthony Gill led the Cavs with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field to go with seven rebounds and two steals.

Malcolm Brogdon had 13 points, and London Perrantes had 12 points and a game-high eight assists.
