Lynchburg Hillcats finish sweep of Carolina Mudcats

lynchburg hillcatsThe Lynchburg Hillcats completed a four-game sweep over the Carolina Mudcats tonight with a 7-4 win. Navery Moore struck out a season-high seven batters on his way to his third win of the year. Emerson Landoni collected his fourth multi-hit game in just his fifth game with the Hillcats this season.

The Mudcats took the early lead in the first. Jerrud Sabourin doubled home Tyler Naquin. The Hillcats took the lead away in the second inning. Elmer Reyes singled in Kyle Kubitza and Ross Heffley. The Hillcats led 2-1.

Jordan Smith tied the game 2-2 in the third inning. Sabourin singled and Smith doubled him home.

Moore then completed three scoreless innings to end his night. He gave up lone hits and stranded runners in the fourth and fifth innings, before capping his night with a 1-2-3 sixth. He struck out a batter in each inning he threw, including two in the second for his season-best seven.

The Hillcats gave him some much appreciated run support scoring three more runs in the fifth inning. Moore had averaged just 2.71 runs of support per start prior to tonight. Landoni highlighted the fifth inning with a two-run single.

Lynchburg added two more in the seventh. Matt Lipka, Landoni, and William Beckwith delivered consecutive singles. Beckwith’s knock drove in Lipka. Then, with two outs, David Rohm reached on a error that allowed Landoni to score. The Hillcats led 7-2.

Carolina didn’t go down quietly adding single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Zach MacPhee hit his second home run of the season in the ninth inning to bring the Mudcats within three runs. Naquin and Franciso Lindor singled with two outs after the homer, bringing the tying run to the plate. Sabourin then struck out looking to end the game.

The Hillcats matched a season-high with their fourth straight win and improved to 20-15 on the season, sitting in first place in the Northern Division. Their seven-game road trip came to a close tonight, a trip that saw the ‘Cats go 4-3.

Tomorrow night, the Hillcats begin a six-game homestand. The Frederick Keys come to town for three games startingtomorrow at 6:05pm. RHP Jarett Miller (3-0, 4.00) will start for the Hillcats against LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-2, 4.00) for the Keys. Gates open at 5pm for another Half-price Tuesday presented by ABC 13.
