Until recently, 3D printers amazed only by their existence, they gave the impression that the technology itself exists only in the realm of science fiction. Today, 3D printing is being implemented in various directions of production and mechanical engineering. In particular, this technology is used to construct car parts and accessories. Ford company specialists used 3D printing in practice: they created not only molds, but also details of complicated shape.

Peculiarities of 3D printing

3D printers provide means for creating detailed copies that match the original with high precision. Meanwhile the process takes relatively not so much time and is not difficult for the operator. Specialized software, manufacturing techniques and knowledge of various 3D printing technologies and functioning principles of 3D printers are necessary for successful work completion. Depending on the used 3D printer, the manufacturer can make use of the following printing techniques:

  • Stereolithography, which uses powdered materials such as metal or plastic;
  • Selective Laser Sintering conducted by laser beams in vacuum. This technology has proven to be most efficient when producing relatively big workpieces that require the use of refractory metals;
  • Fused Deposition Modeling with the filament being placed layer-by-layer;
  • Laminated Object Manufacturing. During this process, the material is fused layer-by-layer and the necessary shape is formed by the laser.

Choosing the right 3D printing materials

The choice of materials for 3D printing plays a huge role. Only the right materials can guarantee that the created part will work for a long time and will be completely safe.

  • ABS plastic is used to create press molds and functional details.
  • Photopolymers are highly heat- and impact-resistant.
  • Polyamide is durable but flexible and that is why it is usually chosen to create complex models and high quality spare parts.
  • Aluminum and steel are used to create highly durable and accurate details.

The advantages of 3D printing of car parts

It is possible not only to produce individual details, but also to start small-lot manufacturing.

A pretty wide range of materials makes it possible to print a big list of workpieces: mechanical transmission details, fasteners, body elements, caps, electrical fittings, etc.

If the professional 3D printer is used, the high quality of guaranteed and there is no need in additional treatment.

The production quality directly depends on the used equipment and expandable materials. That is why it is worth cooperating with the companies specializing in the given sphere.

Nowadays, 3D technologies are so widespread that almost anyone can get a 3D printer. If you’re interested in what 3D printing has to offer or even try to get such a machine and print something awesome, check out this 3D printer buying guide (https://top3dshop.com/blog/3d-printer-buying-guide).
