The Virginia women’s basketball team (4-0, 0-0 ACC) earned an 81-46 victory over Longwood (0-3, 0-0 Big South) on Sunday (Nov. 22) at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers used a 9-0 run in the first quarter, a 16-0 run in the second quarter and a 14-0 third-quarter run to down the Lancers and improve to 4-0 on the season.
“We are happy to be 4-0 and we are going to try to work every day to get better as we head into a really tough tournament this week,” said Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle. “I think we are a much better team this year, better balanced and harder to scout. I am really pleased with the balance of our scoring lately.”
Sophomore guard Aliyah Huland El (Randolph, N.J.) had her second-straight 20-point performance, coming off the bench to lead the team with 20 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Junior guard Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va,) and senior guard Faith Randolph (Derwood, Md.) each contributed 14 points, with Randolph grabbing eight rebounds and Mason six.
Longwood’s Kyndal Skersick led the Lancers with 12 points.
Virginia led by 12, 19-7, with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, but Longwood scored the final five points of the period, including a three-pointer from Skersick in the final 13 seconds to make it a 19-12 game. Longwood’s Deborah Headen made a layup eight seconds into the second quarter to cut the UVA lead to five. A jumper by Randolph followed by a steal and a fastbreak-layup from Huland El put the Cavaliers back up by double digits. A layup from Mason with 3:41 remaining in the first half gave the Cavaliers their first 20-point lead. UVA went into the break with a 43-23 edge.
Virginia dominated the third quarter, outscoring Longwood 21-4 with the Lancers going the final 6:08 of the period without scoring. Longwood outscored the Cavaliers 19-17 in the fourth period.
Virginia outrebounded Longwood, 51-27. The Cavaliers had 21 second-chance points, to the Lancers’ three, and scored 25 points off turnovers.
The Cavaliers will be spending Thanksgiving week competing at the Paradise Jam Tournament in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Virginia plays three games in three days against Green Bay (Thursday, Nov. 26), Rutgers (Friday, Nov. 27) and Tulane (Saturday, Nov. 28). Virginia’s next home game will be Wednesday, Dec. 2 when it hosts Iowa in the 2015 Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
