New poll suggests Tom Perriello has a good shot in the Fifth District

The Tom Perriello campaign is touting a poll from a Democratic firm that seems to show that a tight race is in the works for the Fifth District seat in Congress.

The poll, conducted by Expedition Strategies, a Northern Virginia-based research and polling firm that works, among others, with U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, has the MAGA incumbent, John McGuire, leading Perriello by three points, 47 percent to 44 percent.

A release from the Perriello campaign reports that “(a)fter voters hear positive information about both candidates, the race flips, with Perriello leading McGuire 47 percent to 44 percent. After voters hear about McGuire’s record, Perriello opens an 11-point lead, 51 percent to 39 percent.”

Expedition Strategies concludes that the Fifth District race “starts off as a jump ball, but the underlying fundamentals of this race favor former Congressman Tom Perriello, who has room to grow his support and the ability to define Congressman McGuire as a corrupt politician who has sold out his constituents.”

These are numbers and conclusions to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt, considering the partisan leanings of the research firm, but still, I’d be promoting it all, if I was Team Perriello.

At the least, Perriello is within shouting distance, with plenty of time between now and Nov. 3.

“Voters want costs down, corruption out, and common sense back at the wheel, and they are ready to fire McGuire for selling out,” Perriello said, per a statement in the campaign’s release.

“Working families understand that we are all paying more for gas and groceries, healthcare, and childcare because McGuire’s priority has been kickbacks for his dark money donors and his 100 percent rating from corporate lobbyists,” Perriello said.
