There’s another opening on the staff of UVA Basketball coach Tony Bennett. AFP confirmed on Tuesday that the contract of Larry Mangino, the director of player development, was not renewed for the 2024-2025 season.
Mangino had served as director of player development under Bennett for the past three years. Prior to that, he had been Bennett’s director of scouting for five seasons, from 2017-2021.
No reason was given for Mangino’s departure.
All told, Mangino has been coaching at the college and NBA level for 36 years.

The offseason has seen a decent amount of news regarding Bennett’s coaching staff. Assistant Johnny Carpenter stepped down on Aug. 2 to take a job with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, prompting Bennett to promote from within Brad Soderberg, who had been the director of scouting for the past three seasons.
Former UVA hoops standout Kyle Guy was hired earlier this month to serve as an athlete development mentor/special assistant.
And then there was the news from June that Bennett had signed an extension that will tether him to UVA through the 2030-2031 season, after it had come to light in May, per reporting from AFP, that Bennett’s contract had been set to expire at the end of the 2025-2026 season.
This should still leave at least one open position for Bennett to fill, though there would be two open roles to fill – director of scouting and director of player development, based on the promotion of Soderberg and the departure of Mangino.
