It was announced a week ago that UVA Basketball alum Kyle Guy had asked out of his contract with the G League’s Noblesville Boom so that he could take an offer to play in China.
I’m still not finding details on the China signing – the team, the contract terms.
Guy was lighting up the G League with the Boom, which is affiliated with the Indiana Pacers, coached by another UVA alum, Rick Carlisle.
Guy averaged 21.1 points and 7.6 assists a game for the Boom, shooting 45.0 percent from the floor and 37.2 percent from three.
Guy’s career arc has been frustrating to watch from afar; in parts of five G League seasons, he’s averaged 20.9 points per game.
He just can’t get a regular NBA gig – he played three games in 2019-2020 and 31 games in 2020-2021 with Sacramento, almost all garbage-time; then got 19 games in 2021-2022 with Miami, getting good minutes over a three-week stretch as the Heat dealt with a rash of injuries, averaging modest 7.0 points per game over six games between Jan. 2 and Jan. 21.
That opportunity ended with a rash of DNP’s and inactives.
Guy spent the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons bouncing around Europe before retiring and taking a job on the staff of UVA coach Tony Bennett, then hanging around when Bennett retired on the eve of the 2024-2025 season to work under interim coach Ron Sanchez.
When Bennett’s successor, Ryan Odom, didn’t offer Guy a job on his new staff, Guy landed a job at Nevada on the staff of Steve Alford, before deciding to give his playing career one last go.
