UR Sports Botebook: Basketball completes schedule, alums sign Euro contracts

ur-spiders1Game At Northern Iowa completes schedule: The Richmond men’s basketball program has finalized its schedule for the 2014-15 season, adding a non-conference road game at northern iowa on Nov. 30.

The Panthers are members of the Missouri Valley Conference and went 16-15 last year, including 10-8 in conference play. UNI finished third in the MVC standings, marking the third consecutive season that northern iowa placed in the top-3 in the Missouri Valley. The Panthers return All-MVC forward Seth Tuttle, point guard Deon Mitchell and Nate Buss, a member of the 2013-14 MVC All-Bench squad.

UNI has made six trips to the NCAA Tournament, the last coming in 2009-10.

Richmond will play non-conference games against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Conference USA, Colonial Athletic Association, Missouri Valley, West Coast Conference, Sun Belt, Big South, Summitt League and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Further information on game times and broadcast schedule will be released at a later date.

 

Cedrick Lindsay, Justin Harper sign new European contracts: Former Spider hoopsters Cedrick Lindsay and Justin Harper signed on with new European teams over the weekend.

Lindsay, who just finished his Spider career this past season, signed his first professional contract with Pieno Zvaigzdes Pasvalys of the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL).

Lindsay was a three-year starter at guard for the Spiders, becoming the 42nd player in ur history to reach 1,000 career points. He finished with 1,276 career points (10.5 ppg) and 355 career assists (2.93 apg). Lindsay played a major role in Richmond’s trip to the Sweet 16 in 2010-11, averaging 16.5 minutes per game and 1.5 assists per game.

Last season, the Washington, D.C., native was leading the Atlantic 10 with his 18.3 points per game before an injury cut his season short in February.

Harper signed with Sidigas Avellino of the Italian Serie A league for his fourth season of professional basketball.

Drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft, Harper was traded to the Orlando Magic before signing with SIG Strasbourg and playing in France during the 2011 NBA Lockout. He came back to play in 14 games for the Magic in 2011-12, totaling 20 points and 12 rebounds.

He has played in the NBA D-League for the Idaho Stampede and most recently competed in Israel for Hapoel Tel-Aviv, averaging 10.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg.

This past summer, Harper played well for the Detroit Pistons summer league team and forwent invitations from several NBA training camps to sign on with Sidigas Avellino this fall.

A native of Richmond, Va., Harper was an All-Atlantic 10 first team selection in his senior seasion, guiding the Spiders to the NCAA Tournament in 2009-10 and the Sweet 16 in 2010-11.
