A Staunton-based monthly arts magazine will publish its final issue next month.
“I am sorry to say that the April 2009 issue will be eightyone’s last. Our members, advertisers and staff have hung in there a long time, well past the point of financial feasibility. I am very grateful to have been part of such perseverance,” eightyone publisher Deona Landes Houff wrote in a note posted to the eightyone.info website this morning.
Houff told The News Leader in a story posted on the Leader website today that a significant drop in advertising revenue made it impossible to continue publication and that the publication was hurt by the same market conditions that have been impacting the print-media industry across the country.
“I definitively think this is part of something bigger than just us. This is something that the print media is experiencing all over the place,” Houff told the Leader.
The first edition of eightyone was published in 1998, but the magazine hit another financial rough patch in 2002 that sent it into hiatus before a relaunch in 2004.
Houff told the Leader that eightyone had six contract employees.
