Sunday-night accident claims life of Staunton man

policecar3A Staunton man is dead following a crash Sunday night in Augusta County. Virginia State Police Trooper S.A. Simmons is investigating the incident that occurred at 8:23 p.m. on Route 11 less than a mile north of Route 701.

A 1996 Ford Explorer was traveling along Route 11 when it ran off the road and struck an embankment. The driver, Daniel B. Hudnall, 24, of Staunton, Va., was thrown from the Explorer into the southbound travel lane. Moments later a 2012 Hyundai Sonata struck Hudnall.

Hudnall died at the scene. He had not been wearing a seat belt. Based on witness accounts, excessive speed was a factor in the cause of crash involving the Explorer.

The crash remains under investigation. No charges will be placed.
