Robert Hurt votes for House immigration bill

Chris Graham

Robert_HurtCongressman Robert Hurt (R-Virginia) released a statement after voting in favor of the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act, H.R. 3009, which would prevent state and local governments from receiving federal grants if their laws, policies, or procedures inhibit the enforcement of immigration laws.

“Our immigration system is undeniably broken and in need of serious reform.  At all levels of government, we must renew the effort to achieve an immigration policy that is rooted in the rule of law.  Jurisdictions that actively refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials to enforce our nation’s immigration laws undermine the sovereignty and security of this great nation.  States and localities that put public safety at risk and frustrate the enforcement of our immigration law should face consequences.  This legislation is simple; it ensures that if jurisdictions hinder federal immigration enforcement, they may not receive federal law enforcement grants.

“By requiring states and localities to follow the law, the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act is fundamental to implementing a lawful immigration policy.  I call on our colleagues in the Senate to join us in these efforts, and it is my hope the White House will begin to work with us to enforce our nation’s laws.”
