vmi baseballJunior right-hander Zak Kent struck out 13 batters Sunday, but the Binghamton University baseball team defeated VMI 2-1 in non-conference play.

Kent allowed just four hits in a complete-game effort, with no walks. He struck out four batters in the top of the third inning. The first batter reached first on a wild pitch after striking out, and he sent down the next three Bearcats on strikes.

The Keydets opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, as Will Knight was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch. Binghamton plated a single run in the fourth and Justin Drpich provided what would be the winning run with a solo home run in the fifth.

VMI loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but Ryan Bryggman forced a ground ball to end the threat.

Don Goodes had two hits for the Keydets. Sam Freedman went 2-4 for the visitors.

Jake Miller earned the win for Binghamton (4-6) and Bryggman picked up the save.

The Keydets are slated to host another non-conference three-game series next weekend against Lehigh University, Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
