Is your website mobile-friendly? Four points to ponder

Contributors

AFPnewYou may have gotten a notice from Google, or more likely, a marketing company that purports to be speaking for Google, about your website’s mobile-friendliness, or unfriendliness.

The messages can scare the bejeezus out of you, for good reason. If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, and you thus get penalized in Google searches, that can be devastating for your online marketing, with more than half of all web traffic coming from smartphones and tablets.

What can you do to make sure that your site is mobile-friendly?

  • Ask the question: This really is half the battle. Google offers a test to measure your site’s mobile-friendliness. The answer might not be what you want to hear, but at least you know.
  • Is my best bet the app route? The big boys almost all seem to have apps. Why shouldn’t I? (Because you’re not made of money.)
  • Can I maintain my branding on my mobile site? Most of the free mobile-site plugins that are available strip the look and feel of your desktop in favor of a standardized approach. The good news is: there are workarounds.
  • Do I need a new, standalone mobile website? Your developer might tell you that you do. Truth is, no.

Class Schedule: Tuesday, April 29, noon-1 p.m.

Augusta Free Press will cover these topics in depth in our Mobile Websites 101 class.

Classes are offered at Panera Bread in Waynesboro.
