Golf: This is how UVA clinched Commonwealth Clash over Virginia Tech

Chris Graham

Clash_smallThe UVA men’s golf team’s fourth-place finish at the ACC Championships today clinched the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash for the Cavaliers. UVA placed above in-state rival Virginia Tech (sixth place) in the final team standings to earn the point at stake between the teams in the rivalry series.

The Cavaliers currently own a 12-7 advantage in the point standings with only men’s and women’s outdoor track and field (based on the finishes at the ACC Championships) and the fan point yet to be decided.

Virginia529 is the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics.

In addition to winning the match-up in men’s golf, the Cavalier programs earned points against their Hokie counterparts in the sports of women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s tennis.

The two schools split points in the sports of volleyball and softball.

Virginia Tech earned points in the rivalry standings for football, baseball, men’s swimming and diving, wrestling and men’s and women’s indoor track and field.

The Commonwealth Clash is built on a tradition started when the two schools first competed against each other in a football game in 1895. The competition includes the 21 sports inwhich the two schools compete against each other, plus one fan-decided point.
