Family of man killed in scooter accident asking community for help

The family of an Augusta County man who died in an electric scooter accident on Wednesday are hoping Good Samaritans will help them get him home.

John Berrett, 51, of Greenville, was killed when police said he went through a stop sign and was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of 4th Street and Stuart Street in Harrisonburg.

The family said Berrett was hoping to travel to Utah soon, but not under these circumstances.

The family is asking the public for help and have set up a gofundme to cover costs to give him a final resting place near his children and grandchildren in Utah.

“Please help us bring my dad home! All he wanted was to come home and meet his granddaughters and to be a grandpa,” wrote his daughter, Lindsey Thomson. “We spent hours on the phone talking about all the goals he had and how within the next year, he’d hopefully be able to finally make it back to Utah.”

Thomson wrote that her father had a “rough life” but said he had spent years “getting right with God.”

Although his past included addiction issues and prison, she said, her father was in Alcoholics Anonymous and was looking for a fresh start.

Making the case for universal health care: The message is the message
