Kim Joralemon, SNAP Ed Program Assistant/Family Nutrition Program with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office, offered a very thorough discussion on “Food Safety Tips,” “Eating Smart at Home,” and “Foodborne Illness: Ten Least Wanted Foodborne Pathogens.”
Twenty-two ERSC members and four guests were in attendance on February 27 when Mrs. Joralemon visited the ERSC, and offered the nearly hour long discussion. Some of the tips offered included: ways to safely sanitize your kitchen, how to properly store meat, the causes of a variety of foodborne illnesses, ways to properly prepare meats, poultry, eggs and fish, and ways to properly store foods.
Mrs. Joralemon provided four informational sheets to coincide with her talk, and afterwards, each attendee received a reusable tote bag filled with dry cereal, pickles, a calendar with recipes, a box of macaroni, a refrigerator magnet with food safety tips, and food thermometers.
This nutritional series will continue in the upcoming months, with Mrs. Joralemon’s next visit set for March 18 at 9:15 AM, when she will discuss food labels.
