Decline in Thanksgiving week travel

Chris Graham

I saw gas at a buck-sixty a gallon yesterday. Which shouldn’t be bad for people heading out on the road this Thanksgiving, even as AAA Mid Atlantic is projectinvg the first decline in holiday-related travel in six years.

Just shy of 1.1 million Virginians will travel 50 miles or more for their turkey dinner this year, which would be a drop of 3.5 percent from last year.

“While the number of travelers will be fewer this year than last, the forecast is stronger than expected during challenging economic times and is likely due to plummeting gas prices,” AAA Mid Atlantic spokesperson Martha Meade said.

The price of a gallon of regular unleaded is down more than a dollar from where it was last Thanksgiving, when the average in Virginia was $2.99 a gallon and nationwide was $3.09 a gallon. The average in Virginia as of this morning was still at $1.78, though prices have been trending lower here in the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia for several days.

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
