A survey has been launched to gain a better understanding of the needs for childcare in Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro.

The first step is a survey for parents and caregivers, open now through the end of June.

The Community Action Partnership of Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro, or CAPSAW, is working to gauge the evolving needs of families, providers and employers across the region.

Findings will be shared in a public report, with recommendations to guide future investments, community initiatives and advocacy efforts.

CAPSAW: Community-needs assessment breakdown

The community-needs assessment aims to look at quality care options and seasonal changes, among other childcare challenges.

The assessment will explore critical factors such as availability, affordability, accessibility, workforce challenges and unmet needs across diverse populations.

“Access to quality childcare is essential not just for families, but for the health of our entire economy,” said Anna Leavitt, CAPSAW executive director.

“This needs assessment will give us a clearer picture of where the gaps are and how we can work together to ensure every child and family gets the support they need.”

The survey is being launched in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta County and the Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA.

“Childcare is a lifeline for families and a launchpad for kids,” said Debra Freeman, executive director of the local Boys and Girls Club. “When families share their experiences through this assessment, they help us understand what’s most needed. Together, we can shape support systems that truly meet the needs of our community.”
