Body found in Bath County identified as missing Rockingham County woman

Cobb Harriett2The body recovered from Back Creek in Bath County has been positively identified by the Roanoke Medical Examiner’s Office as Harriet C. Cobb, 62, of Rockingham County. A search team located the body in Back Creek after 11 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, approximately three-tenths of a mile from where Harriet Cobb’s vehicle was discovered. Foul play is not suspected.

Cobb’s 2006 silver, BMW 325i, was found Monday, March 11, 2013, near Back Creek on Route 39 about ½ mile from Route 600, which is located in the Mountain Grove community. The vehicle was discovered at approximately 6:22 a.m.

Cobb was last seen by her family at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013 in Rockingham and she was reported missing the following day, Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Virginia State Police spent several days following leads and conducting ground and air searches in Back Creek for Cobb.

In addition to VSP personnel, search teams were comprised of members from the Bath County Sheriff’s Office and members from Bath County Fire and Rescue. On Friday, volunteers from James Madison University also assisted in the search for Ms. Cobb. The Virginia State Police Search & Recovery Team, Aviation and K-9 Units along with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Salem Field Office provided further assistance with the search.
