nationals_logoMax Scherzer finished out his first season in Washington with his second no-hitter in 2015, striking out 17 New York Mets in a 2-0 win Saturday night.

Scherzer (14-12, 2.71 ERA) allowed just one baserunner, when Kevin Plawecki reached on a throwing error by third baseman Yunel Escobar leading off the sixth.

The right-hander struck out nine in a row beginning with Curtis Granderson to end the sixth before getting Granderson to pop out to Escobar in the ninth to end it.

Scherzer is the sixth pitcher in Major League history to have two no-hitters in a single season.

The 17 strikeouts tied an MLB record set by Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan in 1973 for the most K’s recorded in a no-hitter. The total was the most ever for a pitcher throwing a no-hitter without issuing a base on balls.

Scherzer’s 104 game score is the second highest in Major League history. Former Chicago Cubs hurler Kerry Wood’s had a 105 game score on May 6, 1998, in which Wood one-hit the Houston Astros while striking out 20 and walking one batter.

Mets ace Matt Harvey (13-8, 2.71 ERA) took the loss Saturday, giving up a run on four hits in six innings of work, striking out 11 without issuing a walk.

Dan Uggla (2) homered for Washington (83-78).
