Palestinian activist Noura Erakat to speak at BC

bridgewaterNoura Erakat, an international human rights attorney and Palestinian activist, will speak at Bridgewater College on Monday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Hall.

Erakat is an adjunct professor of international human rights law in the Middle East at Georgetown University and serves as legal advocacy coordinator for the BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights.

She has helped to initiate and organize several national organizations including Arab Women Arising for Justice (AMWAJ) and the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN). Erakat serves on the board of the Trans-Arab Research Institute.

Erakat spent the 2010 spring semester in Beirut, Lebanon, where she worked with human rights attorney Nizar Saghieh on several issues including administrative detention of Iraqi refugees.

Erakat served as legal counsel for the Domestic Policy Subcommittee of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee in the House of Representatives, chaired by Dennis J. Kucinich, Democrat congressman from Ohio.

She has appeared on NBC’s “Politically Incorrect,” Fox’s “The O’Reilly Factor” and Al-Jazeera.

The program is open to the public at no charge.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,750 undergraduate students.
