A 100-mile cycling event held in honor of 2007 Fishburne Military School graduate Michael Woodard is set for Friday, April 26, starting and ending at FMS in Downtown Waynesboro.
Michael’s Ride was started by Mario Woodard to honor his son, who died in 2008 in an auto accident in Morgantown, W.Va., where he was attending West Virginia University.
The ride began in October 2008 with Mario Woodard making a solitary 100-mile trek from Richmond. The ride expanded outside of the Woodard family and members of the FMS administration in 2011. To date, the ride has raised more than $9,000 to support the Student Assistance Fund at Fishburne,
The 100-mile course consists of two loops with a short break between. This also allows riders who are not able to complete the entire 100-mile course to join the ride for a 60-mile (morning loop) or 40-mile (afternoon loop) ride.
The ride departs FMS at 7:45 a.m. following a send-off by the Corps of Cadets. The morning loop is the 62-mile metric century route used during the annual Tour de Valley sponsored by the Milepost Zero Bicycle Club in Waynesboro. The 60-mile route terminates at FMS, where riders will have a short lunch break.
It is anticipated that the morning loop will take about four hours, which puts the group back at FMS around noon. Riders who want to join for the afternoon ride should be at FMS ready to ride not later than noon. The afternoon ride should be complete by 4 p.m.
Please note that both routes are in the moderate rolling hill terrain of the Shenandoah Valley and include some short, steep climbs.
