The Waynesboro YMCA year-round competitive swim team (SMAC) had the largest turnout in history for the Fall Invite at the Waynesboro Y and used the excitement of the large crowd to set three new SMAC team records. The SMAC Fall Invite was attended by 380 swimmers from Charlottesville to Roanoke.

Boston College running back Andre Williams and Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald lead a group of nine Atlantic Coast Conference Football Players of the Week announced on Monday. The ACC Offensive Back of the Week honor is Williams’ second straight and third of the season.

The VMI Keydets took a 17-7 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Bucknell Bison forced four turnovers in the final 22:07 and went on to a 35-23 win in non-conference football action Saturday at VMI’s Foster Stadium. The game was the season finale for both schools and was VMI’s Senior Day.

Valparaiso used a 14-0 first-half run to grab momentum as part of an overall 36-6 scoring advantage spanning the halves to push past James Madison 81-49 on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Recreation Center. Valpo improved to 3-3 overall while JMU fell to 2-4 after the first meeting between the programs.

ODU football fell to North Carolina 80-20 in the season finale Saturday afternoon at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill. ODU (8-4) trailed 14-13 after the first quarter, but UNC (6-5) followed by scoring 42 straight points to build a 56-14 lead.

VDOT will open Route 727 (Airport Road) in Rockingham County on Friday. Contractors from Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville have substantially completed the project just west of Route 11 at Mount Crawford. The work included construction of a new bridge over the North River and realigning part of the road to eliminate two sharp curves.

The Virginia Board of Education today unanimously approved an A-F grading system that will assign letter grades to schools based on the percentages of students demonstrating proficiency, academic growth and college and career readiness. Initial letter grades will be announced at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.

Freshman QJ Peterson scored 38 points, including 15 straight at one point in the first half, and D.J. Covington added 29 markers and his second seven-block game in a week as the VMI Keydets defeated the Bridgewater College Eagles, 112-86 in non-conference basketball action Wednesday at Cameron Hall in Lexington.
