salem red soxSam Wolff and Cody Ege faced just four batters over the minimum and the Myrtle Beach offense provided single tallies in three separate innings to lead the Pelicans to a 3-0 blanking of the Salem Red Sox on Saturday night at LewisGale Field.

Wolff (W, 1-1) dominated the Sox for the second time in six days, but this time came out on the right end of the draw. The righthander was perfect against Salem through four innings on Sunday and on Saturday night, limited the Sox to just two hits over 6.1 dominant frames. Wolff faced the minimum through the first three innings, using two double play balls to work around a walk and a single. He ended up striking out three and walking three in his outing before giving way to Ege, who forced a double play ball off the bat of Matt Gedman to finish out the seventh inning.

Ege (S, 1) worked around a one-out error in the eighth and a two-out hit batter in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. Salem did not get a base runner in scoring position until Carson Blair moved to second on a throwing error with two outs in the last of the ninth.

On the flip side, Corey Littrell (L, 0-1) was superb for Salem after a couple early blips. The Pelicans got to the lefty in the first with three-straight two-out singles, culminating in a Joey Gallo RBI base knock scoring Nick Williams. An inning later, Littrell walked Preston Beck to lead off the inning and he came around to score on a RBI single from Odubel Herrera to make it 2-0 Myrtle Beach.

Littrell retired 13 of the final 15 he faced, though, including seven strikeouts. Kyle Martin ceded an unearned run in the seventh, the only mark against him in three strong innings of relief.

Salem will now look to snap out of its first losing skid of 2014 on Sunday afternoon. Brian Johnson (1-0, 5.29) will get the ball for the Red Sox against the Pelicans’ Luis Parra (1-0, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05.
