ODU football fell to North Carolina 80-20 in the season finale Saturday afternoon at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill. ODU (8-4) trailed 14-13 after the first quarter, but UNC (6-5) followed by scoring 42 straight points to build a 56-14 lead.

VDOT will open Route 727 (Airport Road) in Rockingham County on Friday. Contractors from Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville have substantially completed the project just west of Route 11 at Mount Crawford. The work included construction of a new bridge over the North River and realigning part of the road to eliminate two sharp curves.

The Virginia Board of Education today unanimously approved an A-F grading system that will assign letter grades to schools based on the percentages of students demonstrating proficiency, academic growth and college and career readiness. Initial letter grades will be announced at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.

Freshman QJ Peterson scored 38 points, including 15 straight at one point in the first half, and D.J. Covington added 29 markers and his second seven-block game in a week as the VMI Keydets defeated the Bridgewater College Eagles, 112-86 in non-conference basketball action Wednesday at Cameron Hall in Lexington.

Carlton Brundidge led all players with a career-high 22 points and Detroit kept JMU at bay in the closing minutes to down the Dukes 71-67 in JMU’s home opener on Tuesday evening at the Convocation Center. UDM evened its record to 2-2 overall while JMU fell to 2-3.

State Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath, is in critical condition after being stabbed at his home in Millboro, and his son, Gus, 24, is dead from a gunshot wound, according to multiple media reports Tuesday morning. Details about what happened at the Deeds home are still not known.

Virginia Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe announced on Monday his choices for four key senior administration positions: Paul Reagan as Chief of Staff, Suzette Denslow as Deputy Chief of Staff, Secretary Ric Brown, who will stay on through at least the passage of the upcoming budget as Secretary of Finance, and Levar Stoney as Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Boston College running back Andre Williams, who shattered a pair of league rushing records with his performance on Saturday, leads the group of eight ACC Football Players of the Week announced on Monday. Williams was named the ACC Offensive Back of the Week after rushing for a league single-game record 339 yards in the Eagles’ 38-21 win over NC State.
