Swenson, United States Army, for heroism and gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in the Battle of the Ganjgal Valley on Sept. 8, 2009. VMI football wins Big South finale over Gardner-Webb, 27-9

The VMI Keydets took full advantage of five turnovers and 13 penalties by the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, and led wire to wire in a 27-9 Keydet win in Big South football action Saturday afternoon in Lexington. The victory came in VMI’s final Big South football game, prior to next year’s jump to the Southern Conference.

Lethargic Virginia loses big at North Carolina, 45-14

North Carolina jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, and broke away with a pair of return touchdowns, en route to a 45-14 thrashing of reeling Virginia on Saturday. UNC (4-5, 3-3 ACC) won its third straight in 2013 and its fourth straight in the series with UVa., which has now dropped seven in a row this season after a promising 2-1 start.

#1 UVa. women’s soccer rolls past Maryland in ACC Tournament quarters

The top-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team posted its first 20-win season in school history as it downed Maryland 6-1 in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal Sunday in front of 2,349 fans at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (20-0) advance to meet Virginia Tech in Friday’s ACC semifinals in Cary, N.C., while the Terrapins (10-10) were eliminated from their final ACC Tournament.
