Waynesboro Generals breeze past Covington Lumberjacks, 9-2

generals-lumberjacks3Matt Horkey gave up two hits in seven scoreless innings, and Waynesboro took advantage of sloppy Covington defense in the middle innings to break open a scoreless game, coasting to a 9-1 win in Valley League baseball action Wednesday night.

Waynesboro (8-12) got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to Stephen Pitarra. A Clayton Taylor sacrifice fly RBI and a two-run single by Jeremy Taylor made it 4-0 Generals.

That rally was aided by an error on a sacrifice bunt, and the five-run sixth for Waynesboro was helped out by an error, a hit batter and three wild pitches, around a run-scoring single by Kevin Phillips.

Covington got on the board in the eighth on an RBI single by Ryan Alvarez and got another one across on an RBI single in the ninth by Michael Gigliotti off Generals reliever Brock Turner.

Horkey (2-1) struck out four and walked four, on 91 pitches, 54 of them for strikes.

Nolan Krivijanski (0-3) took the loss, giving up eight runs, four earned, on eight hits in five and a third innings, striking out one and walking four.
