Aspiring writers in the Shenandoah Valley now have access to professional workshops thanks to a collaboration between Writer’s Well and Stone Soup Books.

“There are many of us in the Valley who write and want to improve our craft or venture into new genres,” said Bonner Odell, founder of Writer’s Well. “The Writer’s Well provides that opportunity through in-depth workshops scheduled at various times throughout the week.”

The workshops range in length from one afternoon to an eight-week series.

The summer session runs Aug. 5 through 30 and topics includes:

  • “When is a Poem Done?” with Poet Scott Price
  • “Playing with Perception to Improve Your Writing” with Washington and Lee Assistant Professor Ady Dewey
  • “Writing about Spirituality and Religion” with columnist Luanne Austin
  • “Read Like a Writer” with JMU instructor Samar Farah Fitzgerald

The fall session will run Sept. 5 through Oct. 15.

Classes will be held at Stone Soup Books, located at 150 Race Ave., in Waynesboro.

“This fits our mission of connecting people with story,” said Mary Katharine Froehlich, owner of Stone Soup Books.

“It offers a place for writers in our community to tell and develop their stories in a structured and supportive environment. It also helps those who have been thinking about writing take that first creative leap.”

Registration for the summer and fall sessions is open.
