Waynesboro announces Public Works Day ’14

waynesboro2editsThe City of Waynesboro Public Works Day ’14 is a one-day event taking place on Saturday, May 17, 2014, from 10 am until 2 pm at the Landfill Future Park located at 300 N. Winchester Avenue, just off of Delphine Avenue and 6th Street, behind the Recycling Center.

This will mark the 15th year that the Waynesboro Department of Public Works has celebrated National Public Works Week with a special Saturday event.  Public Works Week is an annual nationwide event signed into law by John F. Kennedy in 1962 to help educate people of the vital role of local public works departments. Our theme will be: “Discovering Community Assets Year 3: Be a Part of the METAMORPHOSIS – Landfill to Park”.

This will be the third year of our community asset management venture. For the last two years our community base has come together to participate in a day of cooperative planting of a meadow on the top of our landfill, and hiking the trails for the day to experience the potential of this community asset becoming a park. We also included a wide range of informational presentations over the years, from plans for south river asset development to the potential link among the Appalachian Trail, the Crozet Tunnel, and the Landfill Future Park bike/hiking trails. This year we will take a look at the future of our infrastructure and discover how Public Works is promoting existing asset management and responsible practices. We will also explore what’s “Under the City”. As always, we will offer our unique blend of hands-on activities for children and informational presentations for adults.

Food and bathroom facilities will be available. Raffle prizes will include plants donated by Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center.
