Watercolor exhibit highlights January at Shenandoah Valley Art Center

During the month of January, the Shenandoah Valley Art Center is exhibiting New Watercolor: A Juried Contemporary Exhibit featuring 18 regional artists.

This show includes work using watermedia in new ways, on new substrates, or with unusual subject matter.

Chee Kludt Ricketts of Stanardsville states, “My approach is both spontaneous and controlled, where quick brushwork, washes, and manipulated light are countered by passages of precise rendering.” Her paintings of mercurial and dramatic skies navigate between reality and interpreted vision, creating impressionistic scenes of subtle tension.

Another featured artist, Susan Crave Rosen moved to Virginia from Long Island in 1995 and began painting. She says, “I have always loved the process… the physical application of paint.  Watching the paint move on its own or with my prodding… the process of making a picture…… that’s the reward.  If I like the finished painting, it’s a bonus.”  Before painting, music was her creative outlet and she has found that, like studying voice, learning to paint is a slow and sometimes tedious process that is a gift in itself.

The exhibit will be open to the public January 2 – 23, 2016.

In the Members’ and Hallway Galleries, SVAC members will display on sale small works of art. Julie Kirchoff will be showing, in the Docent Room, her oil paintings. Please remember that due to galley repairs, SVAC will be closed January 25 – 31.

Come enjoy the gathering of folks seeking creative inspiration, camaraderie, and sharing of techniques through art activities and classes. SVAC offers, the ever popular Saturday Art for Kids, presenting a creative art experience for young artists, ages 6-10, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., ($10).
