VDOT has resources in place for Rockbridge County Interstate 64 closure on Sunday

The Virginia Department of Transportation offers several resources for travelers affected by the closure of Interstate 64 in Rockbridge County on Sunday, December 13. The eastbound and westbound lanes are scheduled to close from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. for pavement repairs between exit 50 (Lexington/Kerrs Creek) and the junction of Interstate 81.

Local traffic will be able to reach the city of Lexington from I-64 eastbound by using exit 50, or from I-81 by using exit 188B or exit 195. Virginia State Police will enforce the following detour routes for all through traffic:

• Westbound I-64 through traffic will detour south on Interstate 81 to exit 150, and then follow Route 220 north back to I-64 at exit 27 in Alleghany County.
• Eastbound I-64 through traffic will detour at exit 27 in Alleghany County and follow Route 220 south. Drivers will then enter I-81 northbound at exit 150. The detour ends near mile marker 191, where eastbound I-64 merges with northbound I-81.

Variable message boards on I-64 and I-81 are advising motorists of this pending closure. Beginning at 6 a.m.Sunday, a network of signs and message boards will guide motorists through the roughly 90-mile detour. Work is scheduled to finish by 5 p.m., weather permitting.

VDOT also maintains several Twitter feeds to assist motorists. @I64VA and @I81VA are linked to the Virginia 511 system to offer continual traffic updates for those interstate corridors. The Staunton District Twitter feed at@VaDOTStaunton provides traffic and project information for Rockbridge, Alleghany, Bath, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Warren, Clarke and Frederick counties.

The I-64 pavement repairs will take place just west of Lexington on the roadway approaches to the Maury River bridges, which are undergoing rehabilitation. Details on the Maury River bridges project and a high-resolution map of the temporary detour route are available here.
