Simone Egwu (Odenton, Md.) had her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Virginia women’s basketball team to a 54-47 victory at Clemson on Sunday (Jan. 8).

The victory improved Virginia’s overall record to 13-4 (1-2 ACC) and gave Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle her first Atlantic Coast Conference win.

With the loss, Clemson dropped to 4-10 on the year (0-3 ACC).

Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) added 13 points and seven rebounds for Virginia. Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) scored 10 points and had four steals.

Trailing by one midway through the first half, Virginia took a 14-13 lead at the 10:29 mark on a turnaround jumper by Telia McCall (Marietta, Ga.) in the lane. After Kelsey Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) had a steal on the defensive end of the floor, McCall connected on another jumper on the Wahoos’ next possession and put UVa up, 16-13, with 9:41 left in the half.

Clemson responded with back-to-back 3-pointers by Kelly Gramlich to take a 19-16 lead with 7:32 left in the half.

The Tigers led 25-23 at halftime.

Trailing 33-32 in the second half, Virginia put together a 7-0 run, capped off by an old-fashioned three-point play by Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) with 12:32 left in the game that created some separation between the Cavaliers and Tigers.

Clemson did not close the Cavalier lead to less than three points down the stretch.

Virginia held a 44-37 advantage in rebounds. Clemson represents the 14th opponent this season that Virginia has held to less than 60 points.

Gramlich scored 15 points and hit three 3-pointers to lead Clemson.

Virginia returns home to face in-state and conference rival Virginia Tech on Thursday (Jan. 12). The game will be streamed on the web by Cavaliers Live and begins at 7 p.m.
