UVA Basketball coach Ryan Odom has signed a contract extension that runs through the end of the 2031-2032 season.
Details of the extension were not made public with the announcement that was rolled out by UVA Athletics on Tuesday.
We have the public-records request in, of course.
It’s only a one-year extension – the deal that he signed in March 2025 was set to expire on March 31, 2031 – so I’m going to hazard a guess here that the real news is going to be, more money for Odom.
That deal paid him $3.25 million a year in base salary, supplemental compensation and licensing pay, ranking fifth among his peers in the ACC – and well off the package that UNC gave to its new coach, Michael Malone, who signed a six-year, $50 million contract to take over the program down in Chapel Hill in April.
Malone hasn’t coached at the college level since serving as an assistant at Manhattan in 2001; Odom, in his Year 1 at Virginia, won 30 games, and going into Year 2, has UVA as a consensus #2 to Duke in the early forecasts for the ACC race.
“Coach Odom has made a distinct and immediate impact on our program,” Athletics Director Carla Williams said, per a statement from the release from UVA Athletics announcing the extension news.
“He has instilled a strong sense of family and established a deep connection to the University for the young men within our program. Ryan is a fierce competitor who is committed to the values and legacy of this storied program. He is a winner, and we are excited about the future of Virginia Men’s Basketball under his leadership,” Williams said.
“I am incredibly grateful and honored to serve as the head coach of Virginia Basketball,” Odom said in a statement. “I want to thank President Scott Beardsley and Dr. Carla Williams for their confidence in me and their unwavering support of our program. This extension reflects the hard work and commitment of our players, coaches and staff, as well as the incredible support we receive from the entire UVA community. Virginia is a truly special place, and my family and I are proud to call Charlottesville home. We are excited about what lies ahead and remain committed to building a program that represents this university the right way.”
