The ever-mysterious “select media panel” has met in secret, and sent up its smoke signals to the polo shirts in the ACC Football offices in Charlotte that have since been deciphered to let the rest of us in on who this week’s ACC Football Players of the Week are.
We’re told, in terms of how they divine who gets these honors, that what happens in get-togethers of the select media panel stays with the select media panel.
Week 2
QB: Gio Lopez, Wake Forest
- Finished with three total touchdowns (two rushing, one passing), 225 passing yards and a team-high 59 rushing yards in Wake’s 38-36 double-OT win over Purdue.
Tailback: Nate Sheppard, Duke
- Rushed for 147 yards in Duke’s 31-27 win at Illinois to lift his season total to 374 yards, an average of 187.0 rushing yards per game, which leads all of FBS.
Receiver: Luke Reynolds, Virginia Tech
- Reynolds, a tight end, hauled in a career-high eight receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns in a 44-21 win over Old Dominion.
O line: Nick Del Grande, Duke
- Posted the ACC’s second-highest pass-blocking grade (87.7) against a Power Four opponent during Week 2, according to Pro Football Focus.
D line: Mylachi Williams, Virginia Tech
- Tallied four tackles, 3.5 TFLs and two sacks and forced two fumbles in the win over ODU.
Linebacker: Anthony Palano, Boston College
- Led Boston College defensively with nine tackles, two tackles-for-loss, one sack, and two interceptions in the 28-21 win over Rutgers.
Defensive back: Kingston Lopa, Cal
- Recorded three interceptions, one for a picksix, in the Golden Bears’ 21-18 win at Syracuse.
Special teams: Nolan Hauser, Clemson
- Went 5-of-5 on field goals and 1-of-1 on PATs, accounting for 16 points in Clemson’s 22-7 win over Georgia Southern.
Rookie of the Week: Javian Mallory, Miami
- Rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns in Miami’s 77-7 win over Florida A&M.
