Senior forward Chelsea Shine recorded her 500th career rebound and was one of three players in double figures as the Virginia women’s basketball team rolled past Liberty, 64-38,Wednesday at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers improved to 8-2 on the year while the Flames dropped to 3-5.
Shine, who entered the contest three rebounds shy of the 500 mark, totaled four boards in the game to go along with 10 points and three assists. Junior guard China Crosby hit a career-high four 3-pointers to lead the Cavaliers with 12 points and also accumulated four steals and four assists. Senior guard Ariana Moorer finished with 10 points and three assists while sophomore guard Ataira Franklin chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
Virginia notched a season-best 19 steals and 11 blocks in the winning effort while tying its season-high with 21 assists. The Cavalier defense forced Liberty into 33 turnovers.
Virginia shot 40 percent from the field (26-of-65) while limiting the Flames to just 27 percent shooting (12-of-44).
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 10-6 lead before going on a 12-0 run to take a 22-6 advantage with just under six minutes remaining in the half. Crosby hit all four of her 3-pointers in the first half, the last two coming in the span of a minute, which gave the Cavaliers a 20-point lead,31-11, with two minutes until the break.
Virginia would lead by as many was 30 points, 48-18, after a Telia McCall layup from Moorer with 10:34 left in the game.
The Cavaliers scored 32 points off turnovers and got 21points from their bench, including eight points from Jazmin Pitts and seven from McCall.
Devon Brown led Liberty with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds. Avery Warley added 14 points and seven boards.
Following an 11-day break for exams, the Cavaliers willreturn to action on Sunday, Dec. 18 with a 2 p.m. game against Radford. Tip-off from John Paul Jones Arena is 7 p.m.
