Midweek staff days are rough, especially the back end of two. As #9 UVA found out on Wednesday, in a 14-12 win at Liberty that was a 14-4 game at stretch time.
“We talked about the fact that we were going to throw a lot of arms and see what we had. Some of those guys pitched really well, and some of those guys have some work to do. That is the reality of playing a double midweek, and we knew that would be the case,” first-year Virginia coach Chris Pollard said after the win, which was on the verge of being a run-rule in the seventh, and ended with the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth.
Harrison Didawick (.364 BA/.975 OPS, two homers, 23 RBIs) homered on a 2-for-3 day (two BB).
Eric Becker (.333 BA/.965 OPS, three homers, 26 RBIs) and Jake Weatherspoon (.273 BA/.960 OPS, one homer, five RBIs) also had two-hit days for Virginia (18-4).
Matt Augustin (1-0, 2.73 ERA) got the win on the staff day, putting in a scoreless, hitless bottom of the first.
Next up: Virginia will return to Disharoon Park on Friday for the start of a three-game weekend series against #24 Wake Forest. The series opener is slated for 6 p.m.
