Tim Kaine statement on Senate Keystone pipeline vote

Contributors

kaine new2U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement on the Senate’s vote on the Keystone XL Pipeline Project.

“Tonight the Senate made the right decision to reject a proposal I believe would take our country’s future in the wrong direction. We can’t throw the brakes on the use of fossil fuels – that would be unrealistic and hurt our economy. But we have a responsibility to generate cleaner energy tomorrow than we do today. Based on the scientific consensus that carbon pollution negatively affects the world climate, it’s clear that the Keystone XL Pipeline – which would transport tar sands oil that is 15-20% dirtier than conventional oil – is not in our economic, national security or environmental interest. The drastic impact of sea level rise in Hampton Roads and other effects of climate change across the world demand that we continue the transition from dirty energy to cleaner energy.”
