Swimming: UVA senior Leah Smith concludes World Championships with third medal

leah smith uvaUVA senior swimmer Leah Smith concluded her program at the FINA Short Course World Championships, earning silver in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay Saturday night (Dec. 10) at the Family Aquatic Complex in Windsor, Ontario.

Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) swam the lead-off leg in the American 4x200m free relay, which also featured Mallory Comerford, Sarah Gibson and Madisyn Cox, that finished second in 7:38.65. The Canadian team touched first in 7:33.89, while Russia earned the bronze in 7:39.93. Smith swam the anchor leg of the prelim relay that posted the top time in 7:41.25.

Smith concludes the meet with three medals after earning gold in the 800m free (8:10.17) on Thursday and gold in the 400m free (3:57.78) on Friday.

It is Smith’s fourth world championship medal overall after earning gold with the 4x200m free relay at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia. The Cavalier senior now has earned seven senior international medals, including gold in the 4x200m free relay and bronze in the 400m free at the Rio Olympics. She also won gold with the same relay at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships in Gold Coast, Australia.

At Virginia, Smith is a four-time NCAA Champion, winning the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events in both 2015 and 2016. She is an 11-time All-American and 10-time ACC Champion.
