The Staunton Creative Community Fund and the City of Staunton’s Innovate LIVE initiative, which brings together innovators, visionaries, and entrepreneurs in the Staunton community, is partnering with the Staunton Makerspace to offer a Maker Camp for middle school students.
The Camp, offered June 6th – 8th, is a unique opportunity for middle school students to be exposed to the tools, ideas, and skills necessary to build and foster innovative ideas. During this workshop, campers will build their own RC6 plane from scratch, including some soldering, fuselage development, setting up an electronic harness, and flight simulation. Grounded in the Staunton City Schools STEAM curriculum, students will hear from guest speakers, including a graduate student at University of Virginia’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The camp will culminate on Saturday, June 11th with a celebration and awards ceremony at Shenandoah Regional Airport. Campers will get a tour of the airport and Blue Ridge Aviation will be giving campers short rides in Cessna airplanes. Sarah Grefe, of Blue Ridge Aviation says, “What an awesome opportunity for Blue Ridge Aviation to make lasting memories for these kids and inspire them to reach for their dreams. Once these kids leave the ground and take flight, there’s no stopping them for what the future holds.”
