The boil water advisory issued for the City of Staunton and some areas in Augusta County will remain in effect until some time on Monday.

According to an update from the city, the results of the water samples should be ready mid-morning.

Water samples are being tested for both residual chlorine and bacteria, and the testing must be completed twice in separate rounds.

The city is currently in the second round of bacteria testing.

Results look favorable to lift the advisory on Monday, according to city officials.

Residential and business customers should continue to boil water before using it for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and let it cool before use.

Continue to follow these precautions until the city notifies residents that the advisory has been lifted.

Customers do not need to boil water for taking a shower, washing clothes in a washing machine or running the dishwasher on a sanitize setting.

The city plans to issue its next update by noon on Monday.

Staunton City Schools were closed on Friday due to the water main break, and the school system announced Sunday afternoon that the schools will be closed again on Monday, and that all district-wide activities, athletics and extracurriculars are canceled.

“Once the advisory is lifted, we’ll take some extra steps to ensure our water is safe, including flushing water lines, changing water fountain filters, and sanitizing equipment for safe food service,” Staunton Schools noted in a post on its Facebook page.

Water is available to those impacted by the advisory through 7 p.m. at the Gypsy Hill Park gymnasium, or while supplies last.

The water main break occurred behind Stocker Street on Thursday night. Utility crews found significant damage to a large, 16-inch water main. Water service had to be shut off to complete the repair. While water pressure has been restored to normal levels, testing is ongoing.
