ESPN insider Shams Charania tells us that UVA Basketball alum Ty Jerome is going to sign with the Memphis Grizzlies, where he will back up the franchise point guard, Ja Morant.
I’m surprised at the terms that Charania is reporting: $28 million over three years.
Jerome finished third in the Sixth Man of the Year voting this past season with the Cleveland Cavaliers on the back end of a two-year deal that paid him $2.5 million for Year 2.
The 2019 UVA hoops alum was expected to be looking for a longer-term deal with pay in the range of the full $14.1 midrange exception.
This was why Cleveland made a move to pick up former #2 overall pick Lonzo Ball, who is set to make $10 million in the coming season, with a team option for the 2026-2027 season, and also used a second-round pick on Duke point guard Tyrese Proctor.
Jerome is coming off a career season, in which he averaged 12.5 points and 3.4 assists in 19.9 minutes per game for the Cavs, shooting 51.6 percent from the field and 43.9 percent from three.
He also played in a career-high 70 games – prior to the 2024-2025 season, Jerome had not played in more than 48 games in a season.
