salem red soxThe Salem Red Sox beat the Frederick Keys 4-0 in seven innings in game three of the three game series. This came after the completion of last night’s suspended game, which Frederick took 9-8 in 12 innings.

Justin Haley was dominant in game two, picking up the fifth win of his all star season. Haley went six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out seven. Joe Van Meter took the loss, allowing four runs in six innings of work.

The Red Sox struck first thanks to Mario Martinez. With Michael Miller and Kevin Heller on, Martinez hit a three-run bomb over the left center field wall to give the Sox a 3-0 lead. Salem would add an insurance run in the fifth inning, when Matty Johnson reached on a two out single. He stole second, reached third on a hustle play once the ball was dropped by Jerome Pena covering second. Johnson scored on a single by Miller.

The 4-0 win came after a wild 9-8 victory for Frederick in 12 innings. The game restarted with the score 4-4 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The scoring on day two would begin when the Keys struck for two in the top of the sixth. Glynn Davis doubled home two runs off of Sox left hander Nate Reed, scoring Jerome Pena and Sammie Starr to make it 6-4 Keys. Frederick added a seventh run in the seventh. Jason Esposito singled home Lucas Herbst, who had doubled, to make it 7-4 Frederick.

But like they had all game, the resilient Red Sox would find a way to tie it up. In the bottom of the seventh, Matty Johnson and Ryan Dent singled, and Reed Gragnani walked to load the bases. With two outs, Mario Martinez hit a hard ground ball past first and down the line, scoring all three runs on a triple to tie the game at seven.

The game would remain scoreless until the 12th inning. Esposito was walked by Kyle Stroop with one out, and then with two outs, Starr was hit by a pitch. Davis singled to right field, which scored Esposito. The ball was bobbled by Aneury Tavarez, which allowed Starr to score an unearned run to give Frederick a 9-7 lead.

But once again Salem would not go down easy. Tavarez started the bottom of the 12th with a double. He came around to score with two outs on a single by Dreily Guerrero which cut the lead to one. But that would be as close as the Sox would get as Miguel Chalas got Johnson to ground out to get the win.

Salem is now 29-30 after the victory in the nightcap. The Sox head on the road to open for a three game set with the Lynchburg Hillcats Friday night. Luis Diaz gets the start for the Sox and Wes Parsons goes for the Hillcats. First pitch is at7:05.
