Prevent the spread of forest pests on firewood

Contributors

newspaperVirginia has many special observances: Dairy Month, Pumpkin Month, even Honey Month, but Firewood Awareness Month? Individuals transporting firewood can inadvertently move forest pests and diseases.

Using firewood obtained from the area in which it will be burned can help keep invasive pests out of Virginia. You have the power to slow the spread of forest pests, so, here’s to Firewood Awareness Month.

When it comes to firewood for campfires, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has this advice: don’t move firewood. Instead, buy the firewood where you will burn it or purchase certified heat treated firewood to prevent spreading invasive pests that may be hiding under the bark. In some areas, you may be able to gather firewood on site.

Keep in mind that trees cut for firewood often died due to insects or disease. While the tree may be dead, devastating pests may be alive beneath the bark and can be spread to new locations via the transport of firewood from one area to another.

Outdoor enthusiasts, your firewood choices matter. Remember, you can help slow the spread of forest pests. For more information on invasive pests and diseases, call 804.786.3515 or go to hungrypests.com.
