Obama wins White House, takes Virginia again

AFP

President Barack Obama was elected to a second four-year term on Tuesday, unofficially winning 332 electoral votes and taking 50 percent of the popular vote in his race with Republican Mitt Romney and several third-party candidates.

Obama also won Virginia for the second time, taking the state by a 105,000-vote margin in receiving 50.6 percent of the vote. Romney polled 47.8 percent in Virginia and 48 percent nationally.

Obama achieved a near-sweep of all of the battleground states in the 2012 cycle. In addition to Virginia, Obama also won in Ohio, New Hampshire, Iowa and Colorado and appears to be on the way to victory in Florida, where the president holds a 46,000-vote lead with some votes still to be counted.

Romney did flip two states that Obama had won in 2008, with a narrow win in North Carolina and a more comfortable margin in Indiana.

Obama’s win in Virginia was a repeat of the historic 2008 win in the Old Dominion, which had last voted for a Democratic Party candidate for president in 1964.
