Augusta County sheriff’s deputies responding to a call in Mount Sidney on Thursday were able to save a 52-year-old woman found unresponsive due to a possible overdose.
This was the first save by deputies after training was initiated earlier this year on the use of Narcan, a medicine that counter acts the intoxicating and potentially deadly effects of opioids.
“I am extremely proud of the program the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office implemented to save lives. The quick thinking and actions of the deputies during yesterday’s incident saved this individual’s life,” Sheriff Donald Smith said.
Deputies were on the scene to serve an emergency custody order for a mental health evaluation. Upon arrival, the woman who was the subject of the ECO was found unconscious and unresponsive, and a powdery substance was found close by.
The deputies administered Narcan, and the woman’s condition immediately improved. EMS responded and continued life-saving efforts while transporting the woman to Augusta Health.
