The Hillcats destroyed the Dash 14-1 as they put up a double-digit number in the runs column for the third time in four nights. Mycal Jones led the offense with a career-high three doubles and four runs scored (also a career-best mark). Meanwhile, RHP Cody Martin completed seven dominant innings and earned his league leading ninth win of the season.
Lynchburg jumped out on top in the second inning with a five-run frame. They batted all nine in the inning. Highlighting the inning were RBI-singles for David Rohm and NIck Ahmed and an RBI-double for Jones. It was the third time in four night that the ‘Cats had batted exactly nine batters and scored exactly five runs in the second inning. They led 5-0.
Jones added his second double of the night in the fourth inning. Tommy La Stella brought him home two batters later with a sacrifice fly to left field, making it 6-1 ‘Cats.
While offense steamrolled, Martin was dealing on the mound for Lynchburg. The only run he gave up scored in the second inning. He hit Juan Silverio in the head to start the frame. A David Herbek single moved Silverio to third base. Then, Ross Wilson hit a ball well into center field for a sacrifice fly. After the second inning Martin faced the minimum 12 batters through the next four innings, giving up one hit to Cyle Hankerd but inducing a double play from the next batter.
The Hillcats’ bats kept the runs flowing late with two more in the seventh, three in the eighth, and three more in the ninth. Jones continued to spark the offense with a double in the eighth. Three more consecutive hits followed Jones in that frame, including a two-run double for Adam Milligan.
Martin (9-6) earned the win after allowing just one run in seven innings. He gave up just two hit, walked no one, and struck out eight. RHP Steve McCray (3-1) took his first loss giving up six runs, five earned, on seven hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Lynchburg is now 10-7 in the second half and in first place in the Northern Division.
