Lynchburg Hillcats top Potomac Nationals, 10-7

lynchburg hillcatsAfter going four games without an RBI between the two of them, Kevin Ahrens and Josh Elander combined for seven RBIs in the Lynchburg Hillcats 10-7 win over the Potomac Nationals.

The Hillcats jumped on the score board in the first inning. Jose Peraza doubled and stole third base for his second steal of the season. Ahrens later grounded out to third, allowing Peraza to score. The Nationals even the score in the bottom of the first.

In the second inning, Lynchburg sent 10 batters to the plate. They collected seven hits and scored six runs to take a 7-1 lead. Ahrens contributed a two-run double, and Elander singled home a run as well. The ‘Cats would never surrender the lead again.

Andrew Waszak made through just three innings for the Hillcats in his first start. He surrendered five runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out one. He took a no-decision.

Matt Marksberry took over on the mound for Lynchburg in the fourth and became the pitcher of record in an 8-5 game.

The Nationals continued to chip away with runs in the fifth and sixth innings. With Potomac within one, the Hillcats gained some breathing room in the eighth. Elander delivered an RBI-double and Ahrens knocked another run in with a sacrifice fly.

Marksberry (1-0) earned the win allowing one earned run in 1.2 innings. He gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out a batter. Nick Lee (0-1) suffered the loss for Potomac. He gave up seven earned runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three.

Game two of the three game series is set for Wednesday night a 7:05pm. The Hillcats will throw right-hander Lucas Sims (0-1) against RHP Brian Rauh (0-0). The Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Amtrak Virginia will go on the air at 6:40pm on 97.9 The Planet.
